Masters in Finance - University of Rochester vs University of Arizona vs University of Buffalo
Hello everyone. I have applied for MSF at various universities. I have received admits from the following universities :
1) University of Rochester
2) University of Arizona
3) University of Buffalo
I am really confused as to which university I should choose Can you please rank the universities.
Neither of them. Rochester maybe, however, I think that you may be wasting money on all of them. Aim higher, i.e. Vandy, Nova or Tulane.
Thanks alot for your reply.I havn't applied at the universities mentioned by you. Is it really that the admits which I have received are worthless.?
Yes, they are worthless. Dig deeper into placement stats. Look at where people end up geographically too. Univ. of Florida has a killer placement ratio. So does Vanderbilt. Tulane is alright with leg work in terms of getting a job.
I'd encourage you to look at linkedin and do an advanced search to get a clear picture. Stay away from glossy brochures and take websites from schools with a grain of salt.
can u plz share ur profile?
I go to Buffalo for my undergrad and the placement is USELESS. There is absolutely no network in anything besides BO roles at local offices. We had a local mattress firm at the most recent career fair.
Delete the email and don't look back.
a local mattress firm? whoa.
Hi. Thanks all. I have received admit to University of Maryland MSF. Any opinions on this program and will it be a better choice than University of Rochester?
Rochester if you don't want to apply to better rated programs which will help you get a better job (or a job!)
I'd leave Rochester off too and focus on better programs or not at all.
Hi. Thanks all. I have received admit to University of Maryland MSF. Any opinions on this program and will it be a better choice than University of Rochester?
I'd go to Maryland over Rochester.
Thank you for your opinion. Do Maryland has better job prospects compared to all of the above?
Hi, I am admitted to UR for MSF Fall 15 as well. Placement records show an avg salary of $45,000 for international students. The fees for the said program is an exorbitant $78,600. Knowing that UR is amongst the top ranked for the MSF and next to the Ivy league schools, I would like to get opinions, reviews whether to consider this school given the stated facts. Which one are you going for?
Look, there are no real rankings for MSF degrees. No reputed publications have rankings because the programs are still relatively new and placements vary from year to year due to small class sizes. That being said, no ivy league schools offer the degree (to my knowledge) so I don't know where your information is coming from. So the only facts that stand are the $45,000 average salary, and $78,600 cost of attendance. Only you can decide whether that's worth it.
Placements with the MSF are (with some exceptions) mostly regional, so apply to schools that are roughly where you want to work and have decent placement statistics. At this point many schools' application deadlines have passed so you're severely limiting yourself if you want to look at other options right now. If you're convinced that you are getting an MSF, then look all the programs and their reviews or placement statistics; ignore any rankings you may see. But if you need rankings to make your decision, ignore anything you see on financial engineer or whatever. Here's a good place to start, but it's nothing near the holy grail of rankings, because everyone's situation is different: just do a search on the forum of "comprehensive us msf ranking." I would post the link, but I'm still new.
If you go to Buffalo, you'll have a hard time landing a job outside of Buffalo.
Out of the MS program, Buffalo only has 2-3 companies come who take 3-5 students. The rest of the MSF students have debt and no job.
It's a very misleading program. On top of that, the location is terrible, the weather is terrible, and the university is poorly designed.
