MBA - 12 months till application

Hi Guys, looking to apply and *hopefully* get into top schools for my MBA in 12 months time.

Naturally I am starting work now on crushing my GMAT. What other things would you guys advise that I could do over the time to boost my applications?

Volunteer if you don't already; take on the best projects, and if you haven't gone internationally, try to; figure out your goals and overall story and run them by current students and alumni; start visiting schools to get an idea of where you fit in; and ultimately decide which schools to apply for. The general consensus is 2-3 stretch, 2-3 competitive, 1 safety, although I definitely didn't do that.

 

you should already be doing volunteer stuff - joining now will help but its most important to be in a leadership position. The biggest thing you can do is at work - get on a few key projects and make a big impact. This will do 2 things: first, give you a good story to talk about in applications, and second impress your boss who will likely be making a recco. A year is a long time at work and you have the chance to make it happen there and get your boss to write you a rockstar recco.

If you don't do this regularly already, take stock of all your work/extracurricular accomplishments. I created an excel in the STARL (situation task action results learning) format and put all the accomplishments in that format, adding more as the year went on. This helped a great deal with my resume, essays, and interview prep. It should help you see your strengths and gaps as well while you've still got time to add more.
