MBA Profile Review, interested in how foreign service impacts intl applications
Good evening all,
Looking for a profile review to get a sense of what 'range' (M7, T20 etc) of schools are realistic and which are reaches. Applications are still probably 2-3 years away for me so please recommend suggestions on how to round out my profile:
Stats:
- GMAT FE: 675
- Q81
- V90
- DI79
- Undergrad GPA: 3.56/4.0 at a top Canadian business school . Majored in finance.
Work History:
- Current job: Staff Officer at a strat level HQ. No subordinates, but very fast paced and demanding relative to other staff officer positions. Frequently working with my countries' equivalent of the Joint Chiefs.
- Previous jobs:
- Training Team Commander (~250 subordinates). Commanded a multi-national, company sized unit of instructors. Strong quantifiable feedback from partner forces in terms of training quality our team was able to deliver. Outperformed other training teams.
- Company Second in Command (ahead of normal career progression).
- Platoon commander in a light infantry unit.
- College jobs:
- Army Reservist for 3/4 years of undergrad. Worked full time in the summers and part time during the academic year. I was a platoon commander for basically my entire time in the reserves. """Deployed""" domestically in response to the pandemic.
Misc:
- Leadership role in workplace charity campaigns.
- Nominated for top Jr Officer in my Regiment (didn't win).
- Extracurriculars/volunteering is definitely a weaker part of my application. In undergrad I was pretty engaged with the army reserves and didn't get as involved with volunteering as I probably should have.
- With the way career progression works in the Canadian Forces, I won’t have been a company commander by the time I apply for my MBA.
Prospective Schools:
- Hoping for T20 but curious to see how competitive my profile might be for other ranges of schools.
Post MBA:
- Goal is to pivot to IB.
Please feel free to include suggestions on how to strengthen my profile. I’m worried that ADCOMs won’t care about the military factor if I served outside of the US military.

Final Thoughts:
Your military background is a strong differentiator, even if it's outside the U.S. military. With a higher GMAT score and enhanced extracurriculars, you could be competitive for T20 schools and potentially some M7 programs. Focus on crafting a compelling narrative that ties your leadership experience to your post-MBA goals in IB.
