MBA Programs that recruit in Atlanta

I am currently located in Atlanta and plan to apply to MBA programs this fall. If I wanted to recruit for Investment banking in Atlanta should I be targeting schools in the south east or should I just go for the best finance school I can get into and then attempt to make my way back after?

As an example if I were choosing between Cornell Johnson (known for Investment Banking/ Finance placement) and Emory Goizueta (more known for consulting) would Goizueta give me a better chance because of their ties in Atlanta or would it be easier to recruit from Johnson even though it is nowhere near Atlanta? Or Duke (Atlanta ties) vs NYU (Strong finance recruiting) etc.... I have talked to many current students and always seem to get a different answer as most recruit for NYC, even at Goizueta.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some insights to consider when choosing an MBA program for recruiting in Investment Banking in Atlanta:

  1. Regional Ties vs. National Reputation:

    • Emory Goizueta: Known for its strong ties in Atlanta, which could be beneficial for local recruitment. Emory places people in various high-finance roles across the country, but its local connections might give you an edge in Atlanta.
    • Cornell Johnson: While it has a strong reputation for Investment Banking and Finance placement, its location in the Northeast might make it more challenging to network specifically for Atlanta-based roles.
  2. Comparing Schools:

    • Duke (Fuqua): Has ties to Atlanta and could offer a balance between regional connections and a strong national reputation.
    • NYU (Stern): Known for strong finance recruiting, but like Cornell, it is more NYC-focused. However, its national reputation could still open doors for you in Atlanta.
  3. General Advice:

    • Top 15 MBA Programs: Generally, attending a top 15 MBA program is crucial for Investment Banking. These programs have strong national and sometimes international networks that can help you regardless of the specific location.
    • Networking: Regardless of the school you choose, networking will be key. Schools with strong alumni networks in Atlanta can provide significant advantages.
  4. Local Firms:

    • Investment Banks in Atlanta: Truist, William Blair, Guggenheim, and Raymond James are notable firms in the area. Understanding their recruitment patterns and preferences can also guide your decision.

In summary, while regional ties can be beneficial, especially for a specific location like Atlanta, attending a top finance school with a strong national reputation can also provide significant advantages. Balancing these factors based on your personal preferences and career goals will be crucial.
