McGill commerce vs Warwick Economics
Hello everyone,
I am still undecided about which university I shall attend next year for next September/October. I have unconditional offers from both McGill University in Canada for a Bachelor of Commerce and Warwick University in UK for Bsc Economics.
I was about to opt for Warwick as I know it has a very good reputation in London. Moreover, I thought working in New York with a Bcom from McGill was very, very difficult, almost impossible.
However, I recently figured out that McGill has quite a reputation in the US from what I have read here. Therefore, my main concern is to know whether I would able to work in New York with a Bcom from McGill. Indeed, my main interest is to work in New York, and that would be a huge advantage. If this is not possible, I will go for Warwick, because I am well aware of the opportunities I will have in London. In fact, I would like to work either in New York or London.
I must also admit that it appears life in Montreal is great as a student. (and I have friends at McGill) - one more reason to go there. Please note I would not mind working in Canada a few years (before moving to NY!) if there are good jobs there. I am french as well, would this be a problem regarding Visa and immigration to the US ?
Sorry for the long post, but I am really hoping for answers.
I know someone from McGill who's working at MS FO now so it's not impossible. But location's incredibly important, and it's going to be a lot easier to get a job in London if you're a french national just because of the nature of the business. If you go to Warwick you have both target school advantage and location advantage. If you go to McGill I think you're sabotaging both advantages.
And yes it's harder to get a job in the states if you're a foreigner, partly because it's harder to get a work permit but also because NYC BBs function more in the american market, whereas London is more international.
I'm talking about S&T btw. Can't comment on IBD.
ok here it goes. i studied there as well...life is sick there, girls are outta this world. Its the best place in the world, especailly in the summer McGill has a good reputation, and i know some guys who work in New-York that graduated from there....it certainly isint the best business uni in the city, but its the most reputable..mainly because of its Med and Law programs, which are Ivy level easily. The other programs are just kinda mooching off the Med and Law reputaion of McGill...but still thats all that counts. Let me tell you another tinhg...once you graduate, you will want to stay and work in MTL...the place is getting up there, in terms of Equity Markets. who cares about New York anyway? its not what it used to be,...and its saturated with thousands of ppl who have more experience than you that are looking for work
I have no insight into Warwick, but McGill is a fine school. It doesn not place as well as Queen's or Ivey but definately does quite well, esp in Canada.
From MTL, living in NYC ---> doubt you'd want to/be able to stay in Montreal, just not enough opportunity and dealflow to go around....Toronto is where it happens in terms of Canadian markets.
But McGill B-Comm is pretty good from what I've heard, and you'll have to find some alum on the street to network with.
