MIT or Cambridge?

Which school has more international name recognition? Both are the 2nd most known universities in their respective countries but which is the greater 2nd place university?

For reference, I asked this question on Quora and the answer was overwhelmingly in favour of Cambridge, but everybody who responded was a Cambridge alumnus themselves, so I thought it would be better to ask a more neutral audience.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, Cambridge holds a stronger international name recognition compared to MIT. Cambridge, as part of Oxbridge, is often regarded as one of the most prestigious universities globally, with a legacy spanning centuries. It is frequently mentioned alongside Oxford as a hallmark of academic excellence and cultural influence, particularly in Europe and beyond.

MIT, while undeniably a powerhouse in technology and innovation, is more specialized in its reputation, primarily excelling in STEM fields. Cambridge, on the other hand, is recognized for its broader academic influence across multiple disciplines, including humanities, social sciences, and sciences.

In terms of global perception, Cambridge's historical prestige and its association with Oxbridge often give it an edge in international recognition, especially outside the United States.

Cambridge is more well known in most remote corners of the world but they’re equally prestigious to those who will matter in life. Cambridge is definitely #3 in the world and MIT is around #5 in the world just by how known they are.

Cambridge and MIT are generally comparable and both are famous for STEM. By the way, MIT as well as Harvard are located in Cambridge, MA.

Overall, the Big 5 universities are the leading group in the world by name recognition and prestige: Harvard, Oxford, Stanford, MIT, and Cambridge.
