Moving from 720 - 760+
Hi Guys,
Took the GMAT about 6 months ago, did pretty well (720) but thought I could do significantly better since I didn't really prep as much as I should have. My verbal is fine (90% + ) but I really think that I can boost my quant score up (right now at low to mid 80%).
What resources would you suggest for someone who's trying to work on the more challenging gmat problems? Right now, I'm just focusing on the manhattan gmat challenge bank .
I recommend the MGMAT books. Especially the number properties book. I think 5 problems on my last test were directly from the 3 advanced chapters of the number properties book. I got a Q49.
yeah, number properties is biggest thing, but also need geometry and not just triangles but useful things too.l
Kaplan's GMAT 800. A lot of useful tricks and ways to better approach the mathematical section
I've heard very mixed reviews about GMAT 800... can anyone else chime in?
MGMAT is a stellar resource. Also check out Grockit, a source that has video solutions for every single problem in the OG. There used to be a coupon code for free membership floating around on beatthegmat.com.
GMAT 800 doesn't really have 800 level questions. They try to teach you shortcuts by using the answer choices to solve the problem. That is not math, and if you don't know what you're doing, you'll get lost really quickly. The MGMAT books - $100 on Amazon, are the best resource for quant and SC preparation.
I jumped from 690 to 760 using Knewton. I'd highly recommend it.
I also significantly changed my study habits. I did 20-30hrs per week for 8 weeks...where before I was just studying here and there when I had time.
I'd also recommend creating an error log and studying hard with the new and old versions of the official GMAT guide. And don't just create an error log each time you do a set of problems...review those logs frequently and try to understand your weaknesses. I can't emphasize enough how useful the error logs were for me.
dont know how much its worth it to study for this slight of a possible change with a solid score vs grinding your app more
Second this. I don't see that jump making your app all that much different. Spend the extra time working on an extra curricular.
That said, if you can get your hands on the Advanced Quant book from Veritas Prep, I would highly recommend it. Really challenging problems. Not sure if they sell individual books though. I'm sure someone who has done the course will give you theirs.
I would take again - just drill quant questions from MGMAT for two-three weeks before test day. Helpful if you could take a CAT as well. A meaningful boost in your Q score could really help, especially at more quant-focused programs
