Non target home country??
Hello all,
I'm currently enrolled as an undergraduate in a target school in the UK but I'll need to leave at the end of my 1st year back to my home country since I need to be close to my family due to health reasons. I'm expecting a first.
Do I have any chance when applying to London IB jobs in the future, considering I was in a target school and managed to get a first in my first year? Visa not a problem
I won't sugarcoat it. It won't be easy. The first question for job application forms often is "do you require a visa or work permit to work in the location specified on the job description". Ticking "yes" reduces chances if you are not associate and above, why should a bank sponsor a visa and added complications for an An1, when there are plenty laterals, grads, off-cycles, internal hires currently in the country. But not impossible. I did it and went back.
- Try get an IB job in your home country
- Network well for 1-2 years and collect referrals across London and keep you in the loop for opportunities, also get your friends to keep a look out if their teams are hiring
- find a role and transfer if it is large firm, and ask for internal referrals
- being more open than just IB. You didn't get it this time round, most don't, but it doesn't have to be now, clock in relevant financial experience and apply next time after a year with all the above.
- alternatively a masters is on the table but not ideal since cost and you've now missed the apps season, and would rank work experience higher depending on what it is.
Even international students in the UK need a visa to work there, I think. Although now they have 2 years to look for a job.
Can't I make up a good story and have a good chance applying directly to london jobs because of the target in my cv? (first year only, then I'm transfering to EU home country)
Thank you for your help
I reckon, just apply since you are still in your first year and get an offer/internship. You can try and make a story up, keep in mind my team asks me to filter CVs sometimes and the story is often the same:
I am an international/EU student, interested in IB (no specifity on what), Insert generic news on the IB you are applying to, really want to work in London, Covid has made it hard for family, "predicted first" but lets face it you haven't done an inperson exam since you were 15 and inperson exams are being rolled out, I am in the investment society committee.
So based on what you said, what do you suggest?
Thanks by the way
