Scholarships for High GMAT Scorers
Because GMAT scores are given considerable weight in MBA programs ranking lists such as US News, some universities are trying to boost their ranking by luring in students with high GMAT scores.
So much so that the David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah explicitly mentions on its site that it is offering a $61,000 scholarship and a living stipend if you score above 710 on the GMAT.
I'm curious to see how many universities will follow suit with this move. It'll be interesting to see what other strategies universities could use to lure in students.
Arizona State University skyrocketed in the USNWR rankings (to #29 for full-time MBA programs) last year after offering FREE tuition to those accepted into their program. The chance to get a FREE MBA resulted in a dramatic increase in applications and application quality. It remains to be seen how these students will fare. The students admitted with full scholarship are now in their second year.
University of Virginia's Darden School offers the Jefferson Fellowship - full tuition plus living expenses and stipend. To qualify, you must have a 730+ GMAT (if I recall correctly from a client who applied). It may be too late to apply for this year but for those who are thinking ahead about an MBA, the Jefferson Fellowship applications open in the summer.
