Should I Attend M7?
Hello all, curious what everyone's thoughts are on my current situation.
My question: Would I be crazy to forgo business school and instead attempt to recruit as an associate at a PE firm?
My background: Non-target undergrad who leveraged strong alumni base to work at NYC BB IB for ~2.5 years as an analyst. I was largely unhappy so decided to pivot. I’m currently a combat arms officer in the military (will get out after ~4.5 years this summer, late twenties). Accepted to T7 for this upcoming fall (full-ride). I'm interested in transitioning to PE.
I have a decent network at buyside firms + previously connected with the traditional headhunting firms. I've heard that post-MBA PE / GE / VC roles are primarily reserved for candidates who did PE / GE / VC prior.
Thanks for any insight!
Based on the most helpful WSO content, your situation is unique and offers both opportunities and challenges. Here's a breakdown:
Post-MBA PE Recruiting: It's true that post-MBA PE roles often favor candidates with prior PE experience. However, your BB IB background and military experience could make you stand out as a candidate with leadership and analytical skills. The challenge will be convincing firms that your non-traditional path adds value.
Direct PE Recruiting Without MBA: If you have a strong network at buyside firms and connections with headhunters, you could attempt to recruit directly for an associate role. However, without prior PE experience, this path might be more challenging, as many firms prefer candidates with a proven track record in PE.
Value of the MBA: Attending an M7 with a full-ride is a significant opportunity. It provides access to a vast alumni network, structured recruiting processes, and a chance to reset your career trajectory. Additionally, the MBA could help you pivot into PE or other buyside roles, even if you lack prior PE experience.
Timing and Strategy: If you decide to attend the MBA, you could leverage the program to build relationships with PE firms, gain internships, and position yourself for post-MBA recruiting. Alternatively, if you forgo the MBA, you'll need to rely heavily on your network and headhunters to break into PE directly.
Recommendation: Given the full-ride to an M7 and your interest in transitioning to PE, attending the MBA seems like a safer and more structured path. It provides optionality and a strong platform to achieve your goals. However, if you feel confident in your network and are willing to take the risk, direct recruiting could be an option.

If I were you I would try to network with military veterans working in roles you are interested in, they'd be more likely to help you than headhunters IMO and give honest feedback on your dilemma
