Software Engineers v Management Consultants
Is it true that a Software Engineer graduating from any university would make more or comparable to a management consulting associate from a top tier b-school? Let's compare Software Engineer from Drexel and a MBA grad from Michigan Ross. Thoughts???
Dude, it depends on what company you get into. A Harvard grad can end up at RBC; a Drexel grad could get Google. Given the sheer idiocy in this question, I don't think you need to worry about either career.
Asking since the tuition for both the programs differs by about $50k. What would give me a better Roi? Both in the short and long run. My bank account matters more to me than my interests. Both equally interest me. Prioritizing Roi, what would you choose if you were me?
There are so many variables at play here it’s impossible to tell what your ROI would be. It would most likely be a positive investment in both cases. If you really want to, you can build a financial model in excel taking to account the average salary for your respective major/career from the respective schools.
However, I’d say the safest option for a positive return on your money and time is SWE, because as long as you train yourself to be a top notch developer, you can pretty much guarantee a great career. However, if you hate coding you’ll be miserable and do very poorly so it’s best to do what you like. People often act like it’s so simple to end up at FAANG, but in reality, not so much- many of these developers have put in many many hours working on CS/math classes.
The consulting route probably has a higher ceiling if you make partner (first year partners make ~1M), but most do not make it there and end up burning out/exiting into a corporate job, which could still provide you a solid income. However, that is a tried-and-true path to 1 million/year so if you’re willing to give it your all and sacrifice a lot during your 20’s it’s feasible.
parmesan123123, I totally agree with what you said about SWE. However, post MBA, I would start as an associate and not as a partner. Associate salaries vary greatly by the firm and location. Correct me if I am wrong, but wouldn't the salaries for consulting range from as low as $80k to as high as $170k. Against this, wouldn't SWE start with a low of $80k but increase gradually with time? Again do not forget to take into account the amount of tuition spent on each. I can fit another degree in the tuition difference between MBA and MS in SWE. How would you forecast the per year growth in management consulting? Would it be $20k raise/yr for consulting and $10k/yr for SWE? Any idea on bonuses? What has better and faster growth prospects when it comes to returns? I already have an excel model running for this but am looking for some accurate info. on this forum. FYI, so far in my excel model, SWE seems to be the better option despite the MBA being at Ross and SWE at mediocre Drexel University.
If you graduate from Ross and get a solid offer, you can probably expect a base of ~155-175k and a performance bonus of ~20% of your base. But it’s also a long term play too- if you stick around for some time your pay will progress.
A SWE from Drexel will have pretty variable salary, but on the high end it’s probably FAANG (~180k all in first year) and on the low end it might just be around 100k all in, even lower if you’re bad at CS
