UCL student considering a second bachelor's at a non-target university — how would employers view this?

Hi everyone,

I'm currently studying BSc Economics & Statistics at UCL but have struggled with the mathematical intensity of the course. I'm trying to finish, although I may graduate with a 2:2 or below, or potentially leave with a DipHE.

I'm considering doing a second bachelor's in Economics at a university such as Leicester or City St George's, aiming for a 2:1 or First, followed by an MSc Finance at a stronger university.

My career interests are in wealth management, private banking, asset/investment management and investor relations, rather than investment banking.

For example, how would employers view this academic profile?

UCL — DipHE Economics & Statistics
Leicester — BSc Economics (2:1)
Lancaster — MSc Finance (Merit/Distinction)

I also have some relevant finance internship experience.

My main questions are:

  1. How competitive would this overall profile be for entry-level roles in AM/IM/WM/PB, including smaller firms and boutiques?
  2. Would the UCL DipHE and MSc Finance help offset the non-target bachelor's degree?
  3. Would employers view this unconventional academic route negatively, or would they mainly focus on the final qualifications?

I understand the additional time and financial costs involved. I'm mainly trying to establish whether this route could realistically lead to a competitive finance career.

I'd particularly appreciate perspectives from people working in finance or recruitment. Thanks!
