UF vs UGA vs FSU for NYC (Cost vs Placement)

Hi everyone,  looking for some advice. I’m deciding between three schools for business/finance: UF, UGA, and FSU (all OOS for me). My family is willing to pay $40k, and I’m okay borrowing the rest. The cost of attendance would be about $45k at UF (after $4k merit), $50k at UGA, and $25k at FSU thanks to an OOS tuition waiver.

I’m really set on working in the Northeast, preferably NYC, since I’m from the area. I’m having trouble deciding—UGA and UF seem stronger for business opportunities, but the cost at FSU is really appealing. Interested in IB, Wealth management, and consulting. I also attend a private high school with a good alumni network on the street, if that makes any difference. Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated!

*Just realized I posted this 3 times on accident, sorry.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to consider:

  1. Cost vs. Placement:

    • FSU's significantly lower cost ($25k) is appealing, but UF and UGA are generally stronger for business opportunities. If you're targeting NYC, the prestige and alumni network of your school will play a role in opening doors, especially for competitive fields like IB and consulting.
    • Borrowing for UF or UGA could be justified if their placement rates and alumni networks in NYC are notably stronger than FSU's. However, the $20k-$25k cost difference is substantial and should not be overlooked.
  2. Targeting NYC:

    • UF and UGA are not traditional "target" schools for NYC finance roles, but they do have stronger reputations in business compared to FSU. If you leverage your private high school's alumni network effectively, it could help bridge the gap regardless of which school you choose.
    • Networking will be critical. Being proactive in reaching out to alumni and attending events in NYC will matter more than the marginal difference in prestige between these schools.
  3. Fields of Interest:

    • For IB, Wealth Management, and Consulting, UF and UGA might offer better on-campus recruiting opportunities and connections. However, FSU's cost advantage could allow you to invest more in external networking trips to NYC or additional certifications (e.g., CFA, financial modeling courses).
  4. Final Thoughts:

    • If cost is a major concern, FSU is a solid choice, especially with the OOS tuition waiver. You can offset its weaker placement by leveraging your private high school network and being aggressive with networking.
    • If your family is comfortable with the higher cost and you're confident in UF or UGA's placement advantages, they could provide a better platform for breaking into NYC finance. Between UF and UGA, UF might have a slight edge in business reputation.

Ultimately, the differentiating factor will be your effort in networking, internships, and extracurricular involvement, regardless of the school you choose.
