UIUC MSF vs. Emory MSF (Emory w/ Half Tuition) — Deadline Today, Need Input
Hi everyone — I’ve been admitted to UIUC and Emory for MSF. Emory offered ~50% scholarship, so it is significantly cheaper. However UIUC seems stronger in terms of curriculum and placements for finance. I’m trying to weigh cost vs. program strength and ROI. Deadline is today so any quick input would be helpful. Thanks.
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key considerations to help you decide:
Cost vs. ROI:
Emory's 50% scholarship makes it a more affordable option, which reduces your financial burden and improves your ROI. However, ROI also depends on the strength of placements and alumni networks.
Program Strength:
UIUC is often noted for its strong curriculum and placements in finance, particularly for F500 roles and other corporate finance opportunities. If your goal is to maximize placement opportunities in finance, UIUC might have an edge.
Regional Focus:
Emory's MSF program is likely to have stronger ties to the Southeast region, including Atlanta, which is a growing financial hub. UIUC, on the other hand, may have better connections in the Midwest. Consider where you want to work post-graduation.
Alumni Network:
Both schools have reputable alumni networks, but Emory's brand might carry more weight nationally due to its broader recognition.
Opportunity Cost:
With Emory being significantly cheaper due to the scholarship, the opportunity cost of attending UIUC becomes higher. If the placement outcomes are not drastically different, Emory might be the more financially sound choice.
If your primary goal is to minimize debt while still securing strong placement opportunities, Emory with the scholarship could be the better option. However, if UIUC's curriculum and placement track record align more closely with your career goals, it might justify the higher cost.
