University Grade

I got to Top 20 uni in UK for Econ. I got around 40% for second year grade which is 25% weighting. I'm obviosuly going to knuckle down next year but just wanted to know how much this grade will have an emphasis as I will use it to apply for graduate schemes. I know some firms dont care and dont ask but just wanted to get some opinions.

how much do you think getting a first actually matters?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

  1. Importance of Grades:

    • MSc Grades: According to a discussion on WSO, the importance of grades can vary. For less well-known schools, higher grades are often necessary. For example, people from target schools might get hired with high 2:1s (67-69%), but non-targets often need high distinctions (75-85%).
    • Private Equity: In some prestigious institutions, grades are scrutinized closely. For instance, mega funds may check all transcripts and ensure candidates graduated with high honors.
  2. First Job and Career Path:

    • First Job Impact: Your first job out of university is not necessarily your last. The skills and experience you gain are more critical than the job title or company name. Your actions, performance, and ability to demonstrate your skills will determine your career trajectory.
    • Career Flexibility: Many professionals have non-linear career paths. You can reset and pivot more often than you might realize. Hustle, networking, and proving yourself over time are key factors.
  3. School Prestige:

    • School Prestige: Graduating from a top school can help, but once you're in a firm, your performance and work ethic matter more. Employers value candidates who finish top of their class from reputable schools for their work ethic and intellect.

In summary, while your second-year grade might have some impact, especially if you're from a less well-known school, your overall performance, networking, and ability to demonstrate your skills will play a significant role in your career progression. Focus on excelling in your final year and building a strong resume with relevant experiences.
