University of Minnesota Carlson School of Management relationship with investment banking
I am going to be an undergrad for finance at the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management and I was wondering how this school stands in IB. And if there is any firms, BB, MM, boutique, prop, regional, or commodity firms that recruit from here. I am new and hopeful to the world of finance so let me know thanks!
Lazard MM, Piper, BMO mostly. A little bit Harris Williams and TripleTree. A few kids go to NY each year, I think.
So is it a pretty strong relationship with these firms? And are these opportunities primarily in Minneapolis or also Chicago?
Pretty strong relationships. Primarily Minneapolis. A bit of Chicago. I think the support network within the school is strong, but you have to do a lot of the legwork yourself; nobody will just hand you a first round without you putting in work.
Thank you for the help! Sadly I lack bananas
Oh my bad I wasn't asking for bananas, my computer wasn't letting me give any. I am relatively new to WSO
Banana anyway. Gotta get your potassium up
Anecdotal but this may help. My coworker’s gf goes to U of M Carlson and accepted a FT offer for GS TMT in New York this summer.
I’m also from the area and have had friends go to Carlson and land IB roles. Mainly Piper Jaffray, Lazard, Harris Williams, RBC, Craig Hallum / Hennepin Partners
Thanks for the help! There's not a lot of information on Carlson's relationship with IB so you guys have been a big help.
What most people have said here is correct. Most Carlson kids will end up at one of the Minneapolis banks (probably a combination of both self selection and the Carlson name not being that well known outside of Minnesota), but have seen some place at BBs / EBs in other cities.
I know of an MD at KKR who is a Carlson grad so there's some hope for you
