(UT Austin Specific) WSFM inquiry

Hi all,

Currently a spring semester freshman at UT. Not in any of the competitive finance orgs such as TUIT/USIT SCG/TST/TFT/TEG which are known for having pipelines into WSFM. I know that getting into WSFM is the holy grail for UT students wanting to go IB, but I am not sure what I should be doing now.

Is my time best spent grinding technicals independently until WSFM applications next semester? Or should I focus more on finding stuff to put on my resume through internships and/or involvement in non-finance orgs? Does networking with current WSFM members help? If so, who should I be reaching out to?

I have scoured the internet for any information pertaining to the WSFM application process, but it doesn't seem like there is much out there. All that is online is the fact that there is a written application (resume and essays) and then a two-stage interview process for selected applicants. I honestly don't know how difficult it is to make it past the initial application stage, and fear that my application will be automatically blacklisted due to my lack of involvement in any of the aforementioned finance orgs. I got to the final interview stage for USIT SCG my fall semester, but after that high, none of the other orgs even offered me an interview. If anyone has an idea of what I can now to even get to the interview stage for WSFM, I would greatly appreciate it.

First of all, good work on getting to the final round of USIT SCG - many freshman get cut in the first round.

In terms of an objective checklist -

GPA: it’s critical and WSFM usually has close to a 4.0 average for its classes, definitely 3.9+. Regardless, GPA is important for actual internship IB recruiting, MBA, buy-side etc. and a 3.7+ will serve you well. Ideally, 3.8+ by the time you graduate.

Internships: WSFM really pays attention to your sophomore summer internship if you have something lined up - brand name helps a lot. For general IB recruiting, internships are definitely very helpful. Try and line something up for this summer and potentially in the school year sophomore year.

Orgs: Main thing is upperclassmen support you when you’re in some of the selective finance orgs. Still do USIT analyst group to learn and then join an industry group. It gets easier to make exec / PM as an upperclassmen but won’t help for junior summer recruiting, maybe FT. You can join UFA / LIT etc too to get some help but won’t be a direct support for your WSFM candidacy. CBHP can also be helpful for the network but not really a direct boost per say just more so correlational

Racial / gender diversity is also taken into account if that’s relevant to you.

Also, most importantly, these orgs r surely incredibly helpful to place, but not end all be all. Plenty of people land internships without it and even get retroactively accepted into WSFM the following semester.

Good luck and please feel free to follow up with any questions!
