What does this GS team do exactly?

I’ve been casually applying for jobs here and there recently, and a recruiter from Goldman Sachs reached out to schedule a time with me. It seems like the role is somewhat related to Data Analytics, but there’s no mention of any DA languages or tools. So I’m guessing this role is probably more of a general support position? Doesn’t seem to have much technical depth? I hope friends who understand this field can help me interpret this, thank you!

I personally have over 3 years of experience in data science/analytics, all within the banking and financial sectors."

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know about roles at Goldman Sachs, particularly those related to data analytics and general support:

  1. General Role Description:

    • Data Processing vs. Data Analysis: The role might involve more data processing than deep technical data analysis. This means you could be working on organizing, cleaning, and preparing data rather than developing complex models or algorithms.
    • Support Position: Given the lack of mention of specific data analytics languages or tools, it is likely that the role is more of a general support position. This could involve assisting various teams with data-related tasks, ensuring data integrity, and possibly generating reports.
  2. Team Dynamics:

    • Collaboration: GS places a strong emphasis on teamwork. You will likely be working closely with different product team members who have encountered various problems and can provide insights and solutions.
    • Resource Leverage: At GS, leveraging internal resources effectively is key. You might not need to rely heavily on external tools or languages because the firm has robust internal systems and experienced team members to assist with problem-solving.
  3. Training and Onboarding:

    • Initial Training: New analysts, including those in support roles, typically start with a one-week training in Salt Lake City (SLC) followed by a five-week training program in New York. This training is designed to help new hires get acquainted with the firm and build relationships with their teams.
    • Short-Term Assignments (STAs): After the initial training, you may be assigned to short-term projects to gain hands-on experience and further integrate into the team.
  4. Career Growth and Opportunities:

    • Positioning for Future Roles: Even if the role starts as a general support position, there are opportunities for growth. You could transition to more specialized roles within GS or leverage your experience for external opportunities.
    • Networking: Building a strong network within GS can open doors to various roles and departments, enhancing your career trajectory.

Given your background in data science/analytics within the banking and financial sectors, you might find that this role at GS provides a solid foundation and opportunities for growth, even if it initially appears to be more of a support position.

If you need more specific details about the role, it would be best to ask the recruiter directly during your scheduled time. They can provide clarity on the job responsibilities and how your skills align with the position.
