What to look for in a target undergraduate business school
I'm currently choosing between Canadian undergraduate programs, and just want to know if I'm considering all the factors I should be considering for investment banking. I have yet to receive an offer for Ivey, Queen's, or McGill, but have received some offers for the "tier-2" programs. Thus far, I have factored in the following in my tentative decision:
- On-campus recruiting
- Alumni network
- Reputation
- Co-op/quality of career's center
Is there anything else I should be looking for in a target IB school? Thanks in advance.
most important way to gauge network/reputation is to see where the recent graduating classes are working. If it's top shops or random LMM makes a big difference. You can filter through their career center, or if you don't have access, LinkedIn.
TBH I wish I did this
Thanks for the reply!
Depends on the schools you got into, and what you consider "Tier 2". Coop is definitely an advantage, because during the off-cycle coops, you've got minimal competition. Alumni network is also invaluable - when networking, response rates will usually be higher from alumni of your program, in my experience.
I've gotten into Laurier-Waterloo DD BBA/BMath (Laurier-based), Schulich, and Rotman. Which has the best alumni network? Also, is the list above comprehensive?
I'd take Double Degree. It's got a pretty solid and recent alumni network on Bay Street, and places well for both banking or PE, and more quantitative things like S&T. Additionally, you're way too young to be set on specifically banking - I came into uni thinking I wanted to be a banker, but that is no longer the case. After all, there are a crap ton of opportunities within finance for you to explore. Plus, you can do a crap ton of coops with DD, something you can't do with Schulich or Rotman.
Now, I recognize you are Laurier based, but I don't think that should be too far below the UW based DD.
Thanks! So being Laurier-based still makes it better than Schulich and Rotman?
I'm no expert, but I'd take Laurier DD over Rotman and Schulich. You at least get the optionality to go into something more quantitative.
