Why doesnt CUNY and SUNY schools just copy all the material and exam questions from the top B-Schools like NYU and Columbia?
CUNY and SUNY business schools cost only a fraction of private elite schools like NYU and Columbia. And we all know that graduates from NYU and Columbia MBA programs are preferred for the most prestigious jobs.
So my thought is; Why don't CUNY/SUNY MBA programs just copy the exact reading materials and exam questions from NYU/Columbia MBA programs?
Wouldn't this make graduates from CUNY/SUNY just as smart as graduates from NYU/Columbia? I don't understand why the material is different if they are both titled "MBA".
If they taught literally the SAME EXACT thing at CUNY/SUNY, no student has to suffer through $100,000+ of debt after graduation. Anyone agree?
It's a function of the student body and how well they do. Contrary to popular belief, the professors and classes don't make a school great , the students themselves do. Most top MBAs focus more on group projects than actual written exams, so it's not even like the work is that much superior than what the SUNYs can put out.
Also, most of the top business schools are grade nondisclosure, so you aren't supposed to list your GPAs. Instead, jobs look for the highest performing candidates, and unfortunately getting into a top business school is a measure of what is "high performing"
Calculus and Intro to Econ is the same at Harvard as it is at Florida state - it's the students not the material that matters at a school. Also, you could just purchase the books that school's use if we're being honest.
It’s about quality of professors and quality of students. What makes the top programs great is the collective minds together in one room. Stealing away top professors from Columbia would be extremely challenging
With all due respect, you've got a long ways to go if you think the educational content is what makes graduates from top undergrads and bschools smarter/more successful than their state school counterparts.
Exactly. As a former CUNY grad I noticed it’s the alumni network. Contact an alumni on LinkedIn and good luck getting a response. On the other side NYU alumni are open to their school mates. CUNY is just a commuter style of schools and no real relationships are built like NYU or Columbia. I’ve also noticed many people from CUNY schools tend to go the route of entrepreneurship.
bear in mind, there are quite a few top schools that publish their full course materials for undergrad courses (check mit opencourseware). they appreciate that a significant portion of the value of what they do comes from the piece of paper received at the end.
cuny/suny could teach the exact same course as better schools - even pay through the nose to get the exact same teachers - but they still can't offer students the same piece of paper as nyu/columbia.
brand matters when it comes to education.
