How much do first years generally receive, if at all? Is this largely dependent upon whether they are given a book or is there some standard rate?

Depends on how well the bank does. Every analyst in the IB (S&T, IBD, ect) gets the same bonus payouts (different buckets) at least for the first year and most likely for the second year as well. Look for something in the 20-40K range on top of the 70+10.
