Being asked to find a different job!

My manager has asked me to find a different position, as there isn't any headcount for a VP promotion and it's up or out. I find it hard to believe as my 2 person team's profit has increased over 100% since I joined a few years ago, but whatever. They did say I'll get paid a bonus for the full years work, but bonuses have been low for the whole group anyways over the past few years (think max $40k for an associate). I've never had a bad performance review, and even this year's formal review was good, so it's a bit out of the blue.

I've been in FI sales for 7 years now, and have worked at multiple BBs in multiple geographic locations covering all kinds of clients. What should I set my sights on?

I feel my experience has become so niche that it's probably not valuable for regular companies, and my visa restricts me quite a bit, as I'd need to find a firm that's big enough to be willing to sponsor and willing to pay the higher wage level that's required. I've looked at internal mobility, but I've been told IBD makes people go back to analyst 2, which would be a big step down from associate 3. A lot of other departments aren't sponsoring visas anymore unfortunately.

If I don't find a job in the next few months I'll be fired and would have to leave the US, which would suck as I've put down roots and have started a family here.
