BNP S&T sophomore year -> BB S&T internship? How helpful is it?

Hey, I’ve got a BNP S&T internship for sophomore year summer (2025), I’ll try recruiting this year and see what happens (looking into techand quant specifically), but I was wondering if having some real experience sophomore year helps out significantly for junior year internships. I’m not at a target but I was hoping that if I were to do this it would give me a shot at some of the real top tier S&T programs for junior year. Is this possible/likely or am I overestimating this internship? Just trying to figure out how valuable it would be, because it would probably pigeonhole me into finance if I were to take it, so I’d want some payoff. Thanks

Based on the WSO threads discussing transitions from internships at banks like BNP to top-tier BB S&T programs, having a sophomore year internship at BNP can indeed be a significant boost for securing a junior year internship at a BB, especially in specialized areas like tech and quant. Here’s why:

  1. Valuable Experience: Internships at recognized firms like BNP provide hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of the S&T landscape. This experience is highly valued by BB firms, as it demonstrates your capability and commitment to the field.

  2. Networking Opportunities: Working at BNP allows you to build a network within the industry. These connections can be crucial when applying for junior year internships, as referrals and recommendations often play a significant role in the recruitment process.

  3. Skill Development: The skills and knowledge gained during your sophomore internship can make you a more competitive candidate. You’ll likely have a better grasp of technical skills and market knowledge, which are critical for roles in tech and quant.

  4. Resume Enhancement: Having BNP listed on your resume boosts its strength. BB recruiters often look for candidates with previous internship experience in the industry as it reduces the training burden and indicates proven interest and ability in finance.

However, it’s important to continue networking and maintaining high academic standards. While the BNP internship is valuable, securing a position at a BB will also depend on how well you leverage this experience, your academic performance, and your ability to connect with people in the industry.

In summary, the BNP S&T internship for your sophomore summer is likely to be very beneficial for pursuing further opportunities in top-tier S&T programs, provided you make the most out of the experience and continue to build on it strategically.
