Calling all S&T/Markets Associates & VP's

Incoming AN1 in S&T / Markets (GS/JPM/MS)

What do you want your analyst to know before hitting the desk? Finding myself with dozens of hours of free time on a weekly basis in college and I'm keen to leverage this time to ensure I hit the ground running when I start at the desk. Other than the basics (keeping up with current affairs, product knowledge), what hard skills do you want your analyst to be able to do with their eyes closed when they start on Day 1?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some key points that S&T/Markets Associates and VPs might want their incoming analysts to know before starting:

  1. Market Awareness: Stay updated with current affairs and understand how they affect different asset classes. Being able to discuss recent market movements and economic events is crucial.

  2. Product Knowledge: Have a solid grasp of the products you'll be dealing with. This includes understanding the basics of stocks, bonds, derivatives, and other financial instruments.

  3. Technical Skills: Be proficient in Excel and other relevant software. You should be able to perform data analysis and create financial models efficiently.

  4. Attention to Detail: Accuracy is paramount in trading. You should be able to process information quickly and without errors.

  5. Regulatory Framework: Familiarize yourself with the regulatory environment of the financial markets, as compliance is non-negotiable.

  6. Communication Skills: Be clear and concise in your communication. You'll need to articulate complex ideas effectively to colleagues and clients.

  7. Initiative and Proactivity: Anticipate needs and take action without being told. Understand the workflows and be ready to contribute from day one.

  8. Risk Management: Understand the basics of risk and how to manage it in the context of trading and markets.

Remember, while hard skills are important, soft skills like communication, teamwork, and the ability to handle pressure are equally vital in a fast-paced trading environment. It's also beneficial to be self-sufficient and diligent, as mentioned in the WSO threads. If you can demonstrate that you're smart enough to think for yourself and willing to work and learn, you'll be off to a strong start.
