Career Advice - Physical Trading

Update: Solid advice given by WinnerWinner and anon. Give em a million banana's folks. Carpe Diem.

It's you vs. the world, and nothing is ever given to you. In the words of my late Grandaddy- "work hard play hard, boy"

A few things.

There's nothing wrong with going to your current company and saying I got an offer for X, can you match? This is also a great way to see where you stand. If there is no interest in matching or giving you a better offer, then you aren't being seen as potential management for the future.

Are you sure you are going to get that promotion when your boss leaves? Waiting five years for something that's not a sure thing and no guarantee of a bump in compensation would be very tough for me to hang onto. If you are unsure, there are ways to know. Is your comp getting bumped up quickly? Are you getting promoted at a faster pace than others in your group are or have in the past? These things would be happening if you are seen as the future replacement for your boss.

Do you want to do origination or trading? If you want to trade, why would you consider a non-trading role? Do you think the experience will make you a better trader in the future? Just think about where you want to take your career and which role sets you up better to get there.

Hope this helps and good luck
