Coding for S&T Recruiting
Hi everyone,
Is knowing how to code necessary for S&T Summer Analyst interviews? If so, to what extent? I've heard that coding is becoming increasingly essential for these positions. For context, I have basic knowledge of Python and am looking to become more proficient and learn VBA. Should I focus on learning other programming languages, or concentrate more on behavioral questions, technical skills, and brainteasers?
I would really appreciate it if you could roughly rank the importance of these four areas in a S&T interview or give any advice about the process in general.
Thank you so much!
Focus more on behaviorals and markets related questions. I did get asked to write a function outputting the factorial in one interview, but it was trading specific
agree with this. I got asked an easy leetcode question. I didn't know the answer bc I choked but I still got the job
If you don't mind, could you please let me know what the question is about? I only have basic knowledge of Python and would like to know more about the difficulty of the coding questions. Thanks a lot!
If it's S&T at a bank don't worry about it, they won't ask coding questions unless you have it on your resume. I stupidly put it on and didn't prepare for coding questions, was only asked an easy leetcode question that I choked on, still got the offer.
If it's S&T at a prop trading/HF like SIG, you should be prepared.
I am planning to list Python and VBA under the Skills section of my resume. If it's an internship for a bank, do you think this will lead recruiters to ask me coding questions? Also, if you don't mind, I would love to know what the LeetCode question they asked you was so I can gauge the difficulty of these questions. Thank you so much!
you should be prepared to defend anything on your resume
Should be able to elaborate in an interview on why they are there and discuss the experience you've had with them, if you're only a beginner at it then put that, don't give them an excuse to ask a hard technical. This shouldn't take you that long, definitely spend way more time actually following the markets (where common stocks, indices, rates, FX etc. are at) and any economic/financial news
Only for EQD
Vol desks across asset classes will code
Thanks
Could you go a little bit more into detail on how different vol desks will be using code? And to what level? Basic pandas and stuff like that for data analysis? Or more software engineering?
Current S&T intern learning python now. How important is learning time series analysis / regression analysis in Python? For me that seems like the most useful thing you can do for S&T like rates trading for example.
I wouldn’t pursue coding further than your current experience in python though I would still learn VBA (old guys love that), as the bank I interned for is known for really putting a premium on coding but in reality almost no hiring decisions were made on that factor. Unless you want to trade exotics or do structuring and then yes you need to be a coder
