Commissions and HFT

How much does a HFT trader pay in commissions? Do they even pay on a per share basis? If they are charged the normal $.01/share I can't imagine them making any money.

Thanks!

A lot of HFT shops end up registering as broker-dealers in part for this reason. But with direct market access some strategies can still be implemented through discount brokerages that charge ~30-50 mills and pass through rebates.
