Commodity Data Science Project Ideas?

Currently an Econ major minoring in stats and interested in the commodity trading space. I'm not particularly technical but I recently came across a WSO thread about data science in commodities (https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forum/trading/dat…).

I was interested in any non-generic project ideas that are suitable for a beginner that'll be a good foundation for my data science skillset. I'd like this to be a good stepping stone for a potential career at a trading house or major

We have a big 'data lake' at work that involves processing a bunch of data from as many sources as we can get our hands on & turning that into some form of insight for the desks (we also have some visualisation stuff in the pipeline). This sort of project can be quite fun to work on, as it involves a bunch of different things: database design, programming, data QC (cleaning and transforming dirty data into clean data), even some machine learning/AI (interpolation of missing information, predictions based on previous data etc etc).

I disagree with this approach.  Data science isn't going to help you get a job at these firms.  Instead of creating projects, you should develop your people skills and learn to trade with a small sum of money.  These physical traders have a large supply of data nerds from Oxford and whatnot, the key is can you close business.

Interesting perspective but I'm assuming you are in the industry and still not a first yr M&A analyst?
