Critique my approach...

I recently spoke with a professor of mine for advice on how to break into S&T, specifically trading. He, once, was the head of some product, but has been out of the game for some time now (retired in early 2000s).

He said that there isn't a surefire way into trading and that for every path there will be an opposite one that worked. He advised me to determine what I would like to trade, find some names of people that trade the product, and get in contact with them saying that, amongst other things, I'd like to work for the individual.

Would anyone recommend this? I think my prof is brilliant, but could his advice be a little dated? Would I be better off racking up informational interviews and then legit interviews? I've two years until school is out and I want a summer internship for 2011. Do any of you think offering to work for free during the school year (say a two or three of mornings a week) would work?

We're talking Toronto if it helps.

Thanks!

Are you talking about John Siam?

From my experience it's best to set up informational interviews and showcase your passion for the industry and then hope they offer to retain your resume come internship recruiting time. Asking them to do so is not always effective, in fact, some may dislike the directness and look at you as a user. Silly I know, why else am I sitting here wasting my time talking to you if I didn't you to forward my resume, takes 20 seconds.

Networking is a pain in the ass.
