Crude, Gasoline or NGL's?
I work for a large oil company with a massive commercial business. I do financial PnL analysis for a commodity trade desk but have been given an opportunity to pursue other interests. My manager was nice enough to reach out to the manager of the Market Analysis/Strategy group to see if they needed any help from me, she suggested that I would be able to help them out with some ad hoc projects if necessary. So, I had a meeting with the manager of that group and he asked me which commodity would I be interested in covering.....I was stumped completely. I told him I'll do whatever that requires the most out of me, he said he'll talk to his Crude analysts to see if they need any help.
Should I try to make a push for Gasoline or even NGL markets? We have arguably one of the largest NGL desk in the world so that would be cool too.
I would want to jump into something that is more complex and harder to learn....do you guys have any suggestions?
NGLs Gasoline Crude
in that order for your shop
I'm biased, but I think the NGL markets are very interesting
im in NGLs right now...lots of market changes happening in the next couple of years. if you can get in on the ground floor now and make a name for yourself, should set you up nicely for some follow up work later on
Cool, thanks guys. Seems like NGL's is the way to go....

and what is it you are saying?
I think he's the only one who knows...
John A, traded vol options and storage spreads based on fundumentals. None of those hombre.
NGLs by far.
Curious to know why NGLs seems to be the oil product of choice among this small sample of answers? Is it just out of this list of three choices, because OP's firm is large in the space, random coincidence in preferences or is there a more fundamental reason behind this? I.e. what is more exciting about NGLs than crude, distillates, gasoline, aromatics, petchems etc. when it comes to trading?
Anyone?
lots of $$$ being invested in NGLs infrastructure over the next couple of years by players in the space == fundamentals will change rapidly as this infrastructure comes online so nice place to be to add value as a market analyst. i group aromatic and petchems under NGLs as well.
imo, crude/gas/distillates is a bit oversaturated with people because these were the hot products before and NGLs isnt sexy yet. more upside in NGLs than the others if you want to move up quickly and become valuable
You said you have a large NGLs desk, so then that makes sense. That being said, NGLs are controlled by fewer companies than crude or gasoline it seems, so your options to jump around seem less to me. But there are indeed more inefficiencies which do offer greater opportunities.
