Difference between rates and equity market making

I would like to understand the difference between equity and rates market making in the sense that in the rates desk a lot of time is spent on understanding what is the right price of securities and what client flows indicating as sentiment. However, the equity desk has prices already set by the exchange, so I wonder what are they actually market making?
