Discussing Internship Program over a Beer

Long story short I have been networking through LinkedIn and today I was on a phone call with an alumni regarding a S&T internship at a bulge bracket bank in New York City. At first it caught be off guard because I was simply going to ask him questions regarding the bank and the program but he immediately asked me about myself and my GPA. After practically going over my resume, he offered to have a conversation at a bar this Thursday and to discuss "the market" and "decide if I should give you a recommendation". What should I expect from this conversation?

If it helps he is an analyst in S&T in Forex and I am from a non-target University.

Obviously know your stuff, but given the setting, also exhibit that you're a normal person and that you can talk about other things, if it becomes more casual. Is he going to enjoy having a beer with you? If he can see it happening again, you might get that recommendation. Good luck.

Great work, now the ball is in your court. Get him to like you. How?

Ask good questions, have follow up questions. Ask about things outside of work - interests, hobbys, travel etc. Be interested in what he's saying whether you're genuinely interested or not. If you can get this person to feel good about themselves when they're with you they'll have no problem referring you to other people.

Tip - If you have decent stamina when it comes to drinking try to sustain the meeting into at least 3-4 rounds. People like having people to drink and bs with. Don't be the first to suggest ending the meeting.

Thank him for his time, foot the bill, and follow up the next day.

while you should offer to foot the bill when it comes...if you are a college student getting drinks with an employee...the employee should offer/insist to pay...and you should not argue...just say "thanks so much..thats really kind" (and of course...don't order expensive drinks...just get a beer)

just google it...you're welcome
