Do I need a MSc? which one?

Hi all,

Looking for some feedback form S&T professionals.

Graduated in 2018 from a UK strong uni (high russell group), with very strong academics. I have sinced joined a risk grad programme in a big commercial bank (no BB) never really with the intention to stay as my career ambition is to work in S&T, or in any other role that has a strong contact with the financial markets (HF, Trading). I like the idea of being a salesperson vs trader but I am not picky at all. I would not want to end up in a quant / technology role though.

Currently working in securitisation, where I have developed good understanding of credit as an asset class and asset backed securities. Likely future rotations could include Market Risk. We have a small (very small) S&T shop but lateraling internally is impossible. I did a standard economics and finance degree but with no quant elements. Think econ, financial statement analysis, accounting, corp fin. Gave me basic knowledge of derivatives and financial instruments but nothing advanced of maths or stats and zero programming. I am trying to brush that up with guides that I am finding online (think Vault) to become more familiar with basic stats and common hedging strategies.

Recruiting season is coming up and of course I will apply again to all the summer/off cycle internship (I am trying to back that up with networking as well) but this time I was thinking whether to apply for Masters too. Given my grades (strong first), I am confident that I have a shot at Oxbridge/Imperial/LSE/UCL. It is not just to "reset" my career (also a benefit cause i'm in risk after all) but because I feel like maybe I lack some key skills that are needed on the field.

I'd like to ask you some feedback on the idea, given my background and that I will be targeting internship rather than full time jobs. Do I have a serious lack of skills so that it would make sense for me to gain a master? I also thought about studying these topics by myself but I am not sure how much credit I would be given at that stage.

Lastly, I had an initial look at programs. I am undecided between Financial Maths / Finance / Comp Sci (which would be a conversion given my previous degree). Which one is the one that is viewed most positively? What are the opportunities and possible roles with each of those? What is the actual level of numeracy / programming required to get into S&T these days?

Thanks in advance. Any feedback on my current situation and on the industry (what's the future of S&T?) is also much appreciated.
