Do traders all start in research?
My friend is interviewing with a prestigious buyside firm and his interviewer (head of equity trading) told him they will put new hire traders into a 1.5 year research program.. do a lot of firms do this, and will it be the way of traders in the future? Traders and researchers are very different so I don't think this is a good idea.....

A research program at a buyside firm for trading, or a prop desk is different than ER. Unless they are speficially putting him/her in ER. But any prop desk you will start out doing research and building models based on strategies traders have, this is a different kind of research.
