Experience advice
Looking for some advice/direction towards resources that I can use to source/find summers/roles of any sort in the commodities space. Got through to the final stages (10 applicants or so) at Glencore/Traff/BP etc. for grads - not getting them on the basis of not enough technical knowledge. Trying to find where these roles are but can only find 20 or so. Any help appreciated
Based on the most helpful WSO content, if you're aiming to secure a role in the commodities space and you've already made it to the final stages at major firms like Glencore, Trafigura, and BP, you're on the right track. The feedback you've received about needing more technical knowledge is valuable, and there are several ways you can bolster your expertise and find new opportunities:
Networking: Continue to expand your professional network. Connect with industry professionals on LinkedIn, attend industry conferences, and participate in relevant webinars. Networking can often lead to learning about roles that aren't widely advertised.
WSO Resources: Utilize the Wall Street Oasis Company Database to research firms in the commodities space and find potential opportunities. The WSO Networking Guide can also provide you with strategies to effectively reach out to industry professionals.
Education: Consider enrolling in courses that can increase your technical knowledge in commodities trading. WSO offers courses that could be beneficial, such as the Financial Modeling & Valuation Bootcamp.
Internships: Look for internship opportunities, even if they are not directly in trading but are related to the commodities market. Experience in risk, analysis, or logistics within a commodities firm can be a stepping stone to a trading role.
Specialized Job Boards: Beyond general job search websites, look for job boards that specialize in finance and trading roles. Websites like eFinancialCareers can have listings for commodities-related roles.
Direct Applications: Identify the commodities trading firms you are interested in and apply directly through their career pages. Smaller and mid-sized firms may have less competition and can provide valuable experience.
Alumni Connections: Reach out to your university's alumni network. Alumni working in the commodities space may provide insights or even refer you to open positions.
Industry Publications: Stay informed about the industry by reading publications like The Economist, Financial Times, and specialized commodities trading magazines. They often have job listings and information about firms hiring.
Remember, persistence is key in the job search, and each application or conversation is a step forward. Keep refining your knowledge and skills, and continue to apply and network actively.
