HK S&T salary - being lowballed?

I have received a job offer from an MM bank for a desk quant positions in HK. My background is PhD from a global target uni in maths with solid publications + 1y working at a prop shop in my native country.

HR told me that they will have a hard time paying me even 1mm HKD, despite them looking explicitly for people with my experience.

On this forum, most people claim that HK salaries are similar to NY - can anyone with local experience confirm? I have also studied lots of online resources, however salary ranges for such roles seem to vary from 800k HKD to 1.5mm HKD at some US BBs.
