How to ask for reference in informational interviews

Hey guys,

I'd really appreciate your views because I followed the networking tips here at WSO and was able to get a good number of informational interviews from BB analysts, associates and even a few MDs. So far so good.

But that's where the problem begins - the interviews go well, conversation is friendly and interesting. Usually lasting between 20-35 minutes. But I just don't know how to ask for a reference. I just end up gaining a ton of advice (which is helpful, sure) but nothing like a referral that would ensure I can even get an interview in the first place to apply that advice.

I am a non target so its hard to get interviews at BBs and this is means a big deal to me. Can someone tell what I'm doing wrong? Or how I can phrase asking for a referral?

Thanks, appreciate it.

Don’t ask for one???? If they like you they will refer you, just ask how you can position yourself to be successful in the recruitment process at their firm and they’ll understand but asking is a big nono
