How to get into Glencore?

I applied to Glencore's Commercial Graduate Program in Houston in July and have not heard back yet despite NYC already having a litany of rounds. I heard that this program may require prior commodity experience as those who are accepted are given the opportunity to take a trading assessment after 2 years. Is there any veracity to this? If so, is the only way to get into Glencore FO by first going to the majors and then having a headhunter reach out? Thanks.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, landing a position at Glencore, especially a trading role, requires a combination of persistence, networking, and demonstrating value. Here are some steps you might consider:

  1. Persistence: Don't be discouraged if you haven't heard back yet. Hiring processes can take time, and it's not uncommon for some locations to move faster than others.

  2. Networking: Building relationships with people already in the company or industry can be beneficial. They can provide insights about the company culture, the skills required, and potentially even refer you internally.

  3. Demonstrating Value: Once you're in, even in a role like a Trading Assistant, it's important to show your value. Pay attention to the traders, their phone calls, and what they ascribe value to. Find creative ways to improve processes and fix problems.

As for the requirement of prior commodity experience, it's not explicitly mentioned in the context, but it's generally true that having relevant experience can boost your chances in any role.

Lastly, while it's possible that a headhunter could reach out if you're at a major firm, it's not the only way to get into Glencore. Persistence, networking, and demonstrating your value can also lead to opportunities.

Remember, every journey is unique, and there's no one-size-fits-all approach. Keep swinging from branch to branch, and you'll find your way!
