I got into Investment Banking, now what?

Hey everyone,

I received an offer for the graduate program in IB in Europe!

Which books/preparation would you recommend me to further prepare for this position (structured products)? My profile is not pure finance (More Quant.). I'm reading C. Hull but it's not enough.

Which laptop (2.500-3.500€) would u recommend for IB ? - My master's was more focused on Python, rather than Excel, so I didn't have any problem choosing until now...

Thanks for the comment.

I'm pretty sure the firm will give me a laptop. But now I'm also trying to change of laptop and I want to make this investment taking my future workload in mind.

I gave that price band because, up until I received this offer, I was 100% sure to continue buying MacBooks.

I was recommended the XPS 13/15/17, is this an accurate laptop or would u recommend other series (i.e., Lenovo carbon X1)?

XPS 15 is a standard pick for a upper mid-range creative power-user laptop.

The XPS 13 is not the same as a 15. They are two different laptops with different specs and obviously different screen sizes. XPS 13 is much less powerful and has no GPU

The carbon is most similar to an XPS 13 plus but way more expensive and tbh not really what you want if you're after a powerhouse.

What exactly do you want your laptop to do considering you're not using it for work?

try posting in the investment banking forum.  this is the sales & trading one.

Read: Hull -> Nantenberg -> Dynamic Hedging -> Options trading by Euan Sinclair -> Vol Trading by Euan Sinclair. If you want to read about rates then read Interest Rates Markets by Siddhartha Jha. I doubt any of these books will prep you for the role but atleast will give you a solid understanding of options/rates.

You dont need such a high level laptop. You will be issued a standard company laptop which should be powerful enough to run what ever tf you want to run. Most of your stuff will anyways be on the company servers so not sure why would you need a more powerful laptop.

I can tell you from experience an XPS 15 is not really needed if you want it for personal use. Its expensive bec it has a touch screen (who cares?) and good gpu (again who cares?). Unless you can code to make your programs run on the gpu cores (which i have never figured out how to do. think its not even possible) you dont need sucha powerful laptop. Doubt you will be using ICE/Bloomber/Eikon simultaneously on your personal laptop as well.

Thanks for the book recommendations! Yes I will be working on structured credit trading (IB or S&T?), and any book is nice.

The only times I had to use GPU is while using some advanced machine learning packages such as TensorFlow - Probably also when u need neural networks. In these cases u prefer using online servers as the tasks would take hours and you really need a lot of gpu (in the order of +32 GB GPU for a start).
