Internal Move within the bank

Hi, a senior trader on my floor is leaving the firm and I really wanted to work for the desk. How do I go about asking the head of the desk to consider taking me in as a junior trader without letting my current desk know?

Ask as in emailing in to ask for a few minutes and then explain how I am interested right? What else can I do to improve my chances?
