Is BS in environmental science good for future in energy trading/ energy company
So I'm already getting a business degree, and I have room for more courses. Should I complete an environmental science degree for a career in trading/ the business end of energy? Or will this ultimately be useless/ of very little practical value
Useless.
Well, if it's mostly hard science, then it's possibly useful. But if it's all "studies," then there's no point, except for sh*ts and giggles.
No. Spend that extra time doing internships and holding club leadership positions. Extra degrees = diminishing returns; extra internships = returns to scale.
No, at least in my experience, environmental science was a joke major. Like a watered down combination of chem and physics, with a lot of fluffy, feel-good environment courses.
The only degree I have seen specifically for energy trading is Tulane's Masters program. Colorado School of Mines also has some applicable grad programs. But you would probably be better with work experience.
Add some quantitative, finance, or compsci courses instead of envirosci. It would add some substance to a business major and trading firms look positively on more quantitative candidates
why would you think environmental science has anything to do with energy trading?
Unless your coursework will teach you the renewable markets (RINs, RECs or TRC), I would focus my resources on internships, networking, relevant extracurrics and/or quantitative classes.
absolutely useless; if you want something to help for energy trading look into some transportation/logistics/operations research courses or alternatively chemical engineering or gral engineering courses where you can learn about flow rates etc
enviromental scandal aside (which could have been COMPLETELY avoided had they disposed of the slops properly) trafigura was making 7 million dollars a tanker by buying subgrade gasoline in mexico and refining it on board a tanker by adding caustic soda before selling it off as premium gasoline in north africa. The trader behind that one was a chemical engineer.
