Leaving S&T for fintech

First year ASO in sales at a BB, do not really like trading long term but have stuck around for the comp. Got an offer in fintech for 165k base + 50-60k bonus in a sales strategy role and am deciding whether or not to take it. I think longer term I’d prefer to work in tech given its relatively calmer environment, and I think I’d get more career optionality in fintech, but know that in S&T, comp ramps up quickly. I come from a poor background, which is why I’m torn. I’d appreciate any advice.

Based on previous WSO threads, here are some insights to help you decide:

  1. Compensation in S&T:

    • S&T can offer high compensation, especially if you perform well. However, the industry has seen a rather bleak outlook recently, with the potential for high earnings but also significant volatility and uncertainty.
  2. Fintech Opportunity:

    • A role in fintech, especially in sales strategy, can provide a more stable and potentially less stressful environment compared to S&T. The compensation package you mentioned (165k base + 50-60k bonus) is competitive and offers a good starting point.
  3. Career Optionality:

    • Fintech can offer broader career opportunities and the chance to work in a growing industry. The skills and experience gained in fintech can be transferable to other tech roles or even back into finance if desired.
  4. Personal Background:

    • Coming from a poor background, the decision might weigh heavily on immediate financial needs versus long-term career satisfaction and stability. While S&T can offer higher short-term gains, fintech might provide a more sustainable and fulfilling career path.
  5. Long-Term Preferences:

    • If you prefer a calmer environment and see yourself in tech long-term, transitioning to fintech could align better with your personal and professional goals.

In summary, while S&T offers high potential earnings, fintech provides stability, career growth, and aligns with your long-term preferences. Given your background and career aspirations, the fintech role seems like a promising opportunity.
