Louis Dreyfus Commodities Trader Trainee Program - Interview Advice

I have a first round interview with LDC for their trader trainee program (Wilton / Cordova) - two 30 min rounds with 2 jr traders. I have 0 background in ags as I have been focused on energy (given I am from HTX). I won't turn down any opportunities given my difficulty breaking in. For those who went through this program, what should I be reading about / preparing? Again, assume 0 knowledge, the stuff I've typically read into has been in crude oil / refined products, natural gas, and power trading only. Any help would be appreciated and also have my PMs open / open to a call.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some tips for preparing for your interview with Louis Dreyfus Company (LDC) for their trader trainee program:

  1. Understand the Basics of Agricultural Commodities:

    • Since you have a background in energy, start by familiarizing yourself with the basics of agricultural commodities. Books like "Oil 101" can give you a foundational understanding, even though it's more focused on energy.
  2. Learn About LDC's Operations:

    • Dive deep into LDC's operations, including their trades, offices, strong points, success stories, and failures. This will help you understand their business model and areas of focus.
  3. Trade Finance Techniques and Hedging:

    • Read up on trade finance techniques and hedging strategies. This knowledge is crucial for understanding how LDC manages risk and finances their trades.
  4. Networking and Relationship Building:

    • Commodities trading is highly relationship-driven. Try to get to know people in the industry and understand the importance of building strong relationships.
  5. Macro-Level Data Monitoring:

    • Familiarize yourself with the types of data sets monitored in agricultural commodities trading, such as:
      • US and worldwide weather for rainfall and temperature
      • Drought monitors
      • WASDE reports
      • Import and export numbers
  6. Practical Skills and Teachability:

    • Focus on demonstrating practical skills and your teachability. While theoretical knowledge is important, showing that you can learn and adapt on the desk is crucial.
  7. Interview Preparation:

    • Prepare for questions related to your understanding of the agricultural commodities market, your ability to analyze data, and your approach to building relationships in the industry.

By focusing on these areas, you can better prepare for your interview with LDC and demonstrate your potential as a trader trainee. Good luck!
