Moving From AM SA to S&T FT

Hi, I recently got an internship offer in the quantitative strategies AM group of JPM/GS/MS. I'm more interested in working in a S&T role as a quant or trader, and I was wondering how easy it is to move internally to a trading desk coming from a program like this. Also interested in what my prospects would look like if I tried to re-recruit FT for quant and macro funds.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, internal mobility at firms like JPM, GS, and MS is possible, especially if you're already within a quantitative strategies group. Here are some key insights:

  1. Internal Mobility:

    • At JPM, internal mobility is actively encouraged during internships. Networking within the firm and expressing interest in S&T roles can help facilitate a move. Your sponsor or mentor within the AM group can be a valuable ally in this process.
    • GS and MS also have mechanisms for internal mobility, but the ease of transition may depend on your performance, networking efforts, and the specific desk's needs.
  2. Re-recruiting for FT Roles:

    • If you aim to re-recruit for full-time roles at quant or macro funds, your experience in a quantitative strategies AM group will be valuable. However, quant funds like Two Sigma, Citadel, and AQR often prioritize candidates with strong STEM backgrounds and programming skills. Highlighting your technical expertise and any relevant projects during your internship will strengthen your candidacy.
    • Macro funds may value exposure to markets and macroeconomic understanding. If your current role involves market analysis or strategy development, leverage that experience.
  3. Preparation for S&T or Quant Roles:

    • Coding skills (Python, R, or C++) and a solid understanding of quantitative methods are critical for quant roles. For trading desks, familiarity with market dynamics and macroeconomics is essential.
    • Networking aggressively within the firm and attending internal events or coffee chats with S&T professionals can provide insights and opportunities.

In summary, transitioning internally to S&T is feasible, especially at JPM, where mobility is encouraged. If re-recruiting externally, focus on showcasing your technical skills and market knowledge to align with the expectations of quant and macro funds.
