Networking in Commodities Trading - Advice

I have been sending a few Linkedin requests - about 8 - via connect/inmail to people in the grad programs / ops / risk at the big trading houses (Glencore/Traf) to get them on the phone but haven't received any traction yet. I chose these people in particular because my aim is to get into the grad programs at these firms, and I figured their experience would be very helpful as it would be what I would be potentially doing. I don't want to flood the offices with loads of requests and build a bad rep, so I wanted to see if there is a more effective way of networking with these individuals. I had someone say there were open to speak but then got ghosted and a couple who saw and ignored the requests. My message is a standard/polite ask to learn about their position and product, anything I connect with them on with (sports, etc.), and an offer of a flexible schedule if they choose to chat with me. I understand it's not their responsibility and they have a lot of work to do, so I am mainly trying to reorient my strategy. Would sending cold emails instead and focusing on the traders themselves be a stronger alternative?

Try to focus on people from the same uni as you, if possible. On top of that, it might seem counterintuitive but try reaching out to the more senior people that are actually traders. No chance they see you as competition, they likely have kids of their own so they understand being a mentor/helping young people out, they often have more free time, and overall I just sense that older people are more willing to help younger people out.
