Yay, Russia! Let's arm a bunch of drunken morons with portable SAMs because the inability to tell the difference between a military transport and a Boeing 777 is the NKI. Literally.

why were they flying over a warzone? would they not divert their routes?

Strangely planes fly over conflict zones all the time. I don't think they'd fly over a true war zone like Iraq when we were actually invading but I remember back in 06/07 flying from London to the UAE a few times and going right over Iraq. It wasn't the most comforting feeling when the flight monitor shows the airplane icon going over Mosul but they do it all the time. I had the same flying over Afghanistan from 09-12.

Is your airline the US AF by any chance? taking you to frolic in the sun and the sand of Iraq & Afghanistan in combat fatigues?

Yeah, Merkel will probably call for new sanctions on Putin's cousin's daughter's boyfriend.

Dying by rocket is actually on my bucket list, but I'm just saying. First they lose a flight, (eerily similar to Lost), and now one gets shot down... really really eerily similar to Lost.

I think I'm going to avoid them on kayak.

Unconfirmed reports of 23 Americans on the flight.

Just saw somewhere that pro-Russian rebels confirmed they shot down a plane today but thought it was a military Antonov An-26.

I'd imagine it's a similar feeling to say transposing a number and then sending it to the working group.. makes your stomach drop.

This to all my hatin' folks seeing me getting guac right now..

yep some site showed a pic the separists posted on vkontakte, saying sth like "just shot down a bird, vids prove our victory" and they attached a vid where the boeing's smoke can be seen -> then they later deleted it I mean its pretty straightforward then it was the separists who shot it down, it's Obamas turn now

The BUK-SAM is a launcher vehicle from the 1970's. It relies on radar for target acquisition and it was probably being manned by some militia scrub with precisely zero technical training on how to use target acquisition radar. The radar blip from a military aircraft or a civilian passenger jet would be indistinguishable in the eyes someone who hasn't been properly trained.

This is what happens when you put sophisticated military hardware in the hands of untrained militiamen. These people had no idea what they were doing. Now they're probably about to get a double dose of America's very own brand of freedom.

If any of you guys speak Russian/Ukrainian, this is pretty fucked up. Especially the last few seconds where the Russian officer is saying something along the lines of "fuck them what are they doing in Ukrainian air space, they're probably flying in spies":

//

I love the fact that these guys will send the black box to Moscow...Why not Amsterdam? Or Malaysia?

The Black Box is going to the country that allegedly supplied the military equipment to the group suspected of doing this attack...that is like asking Nixon to investigate if he did anything illegal in Watergate. WTF is it going to Moscow? Wouldn't the investigation be headed by the airline or it's country, if they can't do it, then the originating airport/country, and if they can't do it, the arriving airport/country. In the succession list of country that should be reviewing the black box, Russia is probably near the bottom of the list next to Syria and Iraq.

They didn't let international observers into Crimea and took them hostage in Eastern Ukraine, I'm not sure how they're going to let something like the NTSB or an equivalent agency perform a proper investigation.

My money is on Moscow running the investigation. In the end, Putin will release a statement claiming that fascist neo-nazi gays from the western part of Ukraine suicide bombed the plane to provoke an international response. The investigation will also conclude that 270 of the 280 passengers were Russian dual citizens and Putin reserves the right to invade Latvia. Why Latvia? Because of course.

Any one remember that deal about a month ago where tons of planes in Europe disappeared from radar? Well it just so happens that there was a test of a new military technology that allows the radar ping response of a target aircraft to be jammed (which identifies the aircraft number to the radar ground system) it also so happens that this system can also spoof the response of a target plane.

Taking that into account, is it really all that crazy for the rebels to shoot down the plane. Say we (or a US ally) jammed the ping response of the plane and replaced it with a military one. When you combine this with the facts that the US news media leaves out that Kiev is bombing the shit out of eastern cities.

So this whole thing is a false flag to try and start a war. No one cares about what is going on there, no one is following the sanctions, you have to get people to care. How? Let's have the rebels shoot down a passenger plane. Nothing stokes peoples emotions like a plane blowing up.
