NYSE Broker?

I realize many consider these guys obsolete and simply as media props. I am sure they do actually execute some execute trades occasionally and serve as a reminder of the good ol' days.

I have some questions though as I do have an interest in this as a short term career after my Master's.

Is the payment mostly commission based, what does the average broker make? Does anyone have any insight on how most people get hired in these roles?
