Oil trading - what and how to learn
Am currently a first year analyst in a bank’s oil trading desk that covers all asian and european crudes + distillates + residuals, and it’s been a hell of a learning curve. Since im at a bank, the early months at a trading desk involve little to no real work, as they dont let analysts start trading till quite a long way in, so i have no real responsibilities, and it feels like being an intern tbh
At this point, im past most of the basics, but have no idea how i should be proceeding with the learning/idea generation anymore. Have pitched a few different quantitative and fundamental trades/trading strategies, but that’s about it.
I have always heard that traders who start off at physical trade shops/majors are able to learn much more than those who start at banks, so i was hoping someone would be able to point me to the right resources and areas that i should delve deeper into
Any help and guidance would be really appreciated, as it really sucks to start off on such a opaque product without a lot of knowledge :-(
