Starting at a company like Wood Mackenzie or Platts is a good way to learn the metals market and make connections. You’ll get solid industry knowledge and exposure to pricing and trends, which can help if you want to move into trading later, like at Glencore. It’s a great way to start, but you’ll need some hands-on trading experience to fully transition into that kind of role

Do these types of firms have internship programs? Tried looking online but couldn’t find anything. I’m a sophomore in college rn also interested in metals trading and been having trouble finding relevant internship opportunities.

Im at a smaller shop and one of our traders took this route from journalist to trader. It allowed him to skip ops but it did take him a few years of publication work to make the jump.

If your goal is trading try networking with smaller shops and skip the publication work. CRU/Platts/MB guys know about their markets but at the end of the day someone at a trading house will be more plugged in than they are.
