I am trying to get an idea of the career progression timeframe of a physical trader working at a shop like Trafigura/Glencore. If you join a company like this as a graduate, complete your 2 year rotational program, how much more experience would be required before you get a shot at trading?
I understand that there are no guarenteed slots waiting for you when you finish the rotation, and you have to wait for a slot to free up and be good enough at your job etc for them to take a chance on you. But assuming a trading slot has opened up, is it reasonable to be a junior trader within 5 years of joining the company? Thanks for any advice.
5 years to be given a shot to book some P&L on your own seems very reasonable to me. If you are good could probably come sooner than that. But as to when you actually live and die solely by your P&L, it's kind of organic. You either grow your own book or someone ahead of you quits. Other option is to get poached somewhere smaller.

I'd say 5 years is a pretty realistic time frame. So much of this is having the right skills at the right place at the right time and 5 years should be long enough to tick that first box.
I agree with the previous comments, 5-7 years is reasonable. The fastest I've ever seen is 3 years, and as slow as 15 years.
5-7 years if you are good. 3 extremely lucky, 5 pretty lucky, 7 lucky. Slots opening up (either cause someone leaves or biz grows) plays a much, much larger factor than I thought when I first joined the biz
5-10 seems normal..... you also need a growing biz cause most shops run lean.. if they lose a good person they are prob gonna hire someone on par, not give someone a shot

If you start with one of those shops it's less a question of time (five years should be perfectly realistic) and more a question of probability. Even at places like Trafi or Glencore which have graduate programmes. FWIW, places like the BP programme will increase your chances to secure a trading position, and to do so sooner.
5 years is on the lower end of average, but close enough
